EXP and EBS partnered to overcome design and installation challenges at Sunnybrook Hospital
Problem: Clinical Lab retrofit on the interior of an operational wing at Sunnybrook Hospital.
Constraints during construction:
• no exhaust
• limited noise
• no vibrations or spoils
• limited access through hallways (10ft high, 4ft wide)
Solution:
EBS worked with exp to design the least intrusive deep foundation system to support the proposed retrofit. As the structural and geotechnical engineer on this project, exp saw merit and approved the alternate CHANCE Helical Pile design.
Benefits:
• 50% savings of cost and schedule
• Noise, exhaust and vibrations limited by specialty tight access equipment
• Tested to 600kN in tension
• 440kN SLS capacity in compression and tension per helical pile
• Reduced demolition for access and installation
• Maximum installation depth of 58ft
