Laurentian University East Residence
Sudbury, ON, Canada
Laurentian University located in Sudbury Ontario, had encountered increased enrollment in recent
years and required additional student accommodations. A location within close proximity to the lecture halls and student centre was identified as most desirable to construct a new 12 storey building and parking garage.
THE PROBLEM
A geotechnical investigation revealed bedrock depths ranging from 1.0 to 22.0 metres below grade on the site. These findings posed concerns that the sand fill had the potential to wash into the voids of the blast rock fill placed beneath the sand and could compromise the surrounding foundations. As a result, micropiles that advanced through the fill and could be embedded 3 meters into the bedrock were selected to support a portion of the proposed structure.
